The Wetlands Centre is a not-for-profit educational and research facility focused on environmental conservation and community education activities centred around our local wetlands. We aim to promote appreciation, understanding and stewardship of wetland ecosystems through various programs and activities in research, education and conservation. Right from its inception, the centre has pioneered a number of research, education and conservation projects around our local wetlands, and worked with numerous regional, national and international organizations to foster stewardship of these resources around Western Australia. We are a small organisation with only a few staff members working full time. Nursery Officer

About The Wetlands Centre Cockburn

Established in 1993, The Wetlands Centre Cockburn is a not-for-profit community organisation connecting people with wetlands through projects, programs and events that build knowledge, awareness, understanding and commitment to their conservation and wise use.

Based at Bibra Lake in the heart of the Beeliar wetlands, the Centre supports wetland conservation through learning, participation, restoration activity and community connection.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a team, is passionate about conservation and sustainability, and values sharing knowledge about the importance of wetlands.

About the Role

The Nursery Officer will manage our conservation nursery and help facilitate the Centre's restoration program. Our newly constructed nursery facilities include a propagation shed, greenhouse tunnel and capacity for approximately 40,000 forestry tubes.

The nursery program is supported by seed collecting activities, established wetland and bushland seed production areas, and seed banking.

Working with the Nursery Volunteer Coordinator and under the supervision of the General Manager, the Nursery Officer will be responsible for:

Efficient and sustainable management of the conservation nursery
Supporting the nursery to meet NGIA accreditation standards
Sustainable management of the Wetland Care revegetation and restoration program
Maintenance and presentation of The Wetlands Centre Cockburn gardens
Training and supervising staff and volunteers involved in the nursery, garden maintenance and Wetland Care program
Leading public education and community engagement activities, including monthly plant sales, workshops and the annual conference
Maintaining appropriate source documentation relating to nursery and Wetland Care management
Contributing to Centre communications, including newsletters, social media and website content
Providing regular reports on activities as determined by the General Manager

An important part of the role is engaging with a wide range of people, including Traditional Owners, stakeholders, volunteers, work experience students, school groups, corporate groups and government representatives. Strong communication skills and a genuine commitment to sharing knowledge are therefore central to the position.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Qualification in horticulture and conservation
Experience in plant production and management
Strong knowledge of Perth native plants and plant identification
Experience in revegetation
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Access database
Understanding of occupational health and safety (OH&S) principles
Well-developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Highly developed organisational and time management skills, with strong attention to detail
Ability to work both as a team leader and independently

Desirable

Seed collecting experience
Availability to commence work immediately
National Police Clearance Certificate

Other Requirements

Current WA driver's licence (manual preferred)
Working with Children Check
Current First Aid certificate
Right to work in Australia
